Opening a Business in Ridgewood

Iconic Downtown Shot Cropped and Resized

There are so many things to love about the Village of Ridgewood, including its bustling Central Business District, highly rated schools, thriving music and arts scene, numerous parks and gardens, activities and events for all ages and, of course, its convenient location just 20 miles from Midtown Manhattan.

Ridgewood is a fantastic place to live, work and do business!

The Village of Ridgewood is dedicated to helping you navigate the steps required for opening your new business. This process includes compliance with local ordinances and the completion of necessary applications before you open your doors to the public.

Please note: Several steps can be addressed simultaneously, such as working with the Building Department, the Health Department and the Historic Preservation Commission.

STEP 1: Zoning Officer | 201-670-5500, ext. 2212

Begin with the Village Zoning Officer to see if the location that you have chosen for your proposed business is properly zoned for the type of business that you would like to open. If your proposed business requires approval from either the Planning Board or Zoning Board of Adjustment, a "pre-application" meeting with the Board professionals is recommended to expedite the application process. If your proposed business is not permitted under the Village of Ridgewood Zoning Ordinance, you have the option of filing an application to the Zoning Board of Adjustment for a use variance.

STEP 2: Building Department | 201-670-5500, ext. 5506

If your proposed business requires construction or renovation, you must submit plans and apply for construction permits. We strongly recommend requesting a "pre-application" meeting with the Building Department and the Engineering Department to expedite the process and get answers to your questions.

STEP 3: Historic Preservation Commission | 201-670-5500, ext. 2240

If your proposed business is located in a historic section of the Central Business District and you would like to make changes to the exterior of the building (new signage, awning installation, etc.), you are required to submit an application to the Historic Preservation Commission.

STEP 4: Health Department | 201-670-5500, ext. 2241

If your proposed business is or contains a barber shop, beauty salon, camp, childcare facility, food establishment, kennel, nail salon, nursing home, pet shop, school, or a spa/swimming pool that is open to the public or serves a multiple-family dwelling, detailed plans and specifications must be submitted to the Health Department for review and approval before construction can begin.

STEP 5: Fire Department | 201-670-5500, ext. 5480

Fill out a Business Information Form after signing your lease, and call to schedule an inspection prior to opening. You must have a passing inspection to open.

STEP 6: Police Department | 201-251-4531

Register your burglar alarm with the Police Department.

STEP 7: Trash and Recycling

Businesses must hire a private contractor for trash and recycling pickup.
