If you are selling or renting your home, you need a smoke detector and carbon monoxide inspection!

As required by the State of New Jersey: "Before any Use Group R-3 structure (one and two family residential dwelling units) are sold, leased, or otherwise made subject to a change of occupancy for residential purpose, the Owner shall obtain a Certificate of Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Compliance, evidencing compliance with N.J.A.C. 5:70-4.19, from the appropriate enforcing agency."

HOW DO I SCHEDULE AN INSPECTION FOR MY HOME?

You can schedule an appointment by calling the Inspection Office at 201-444-7898 Ext. 5480, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

WHAT IS THE COST OF A HOME SMOKE DETECTOR INSPECTION?

There is an established Fee Schedule, Per Dwelling Unit:

  • If scheduled more than 10 days before closing: $120
  • If scheduled less than 10 days before closing: $150
  • If scheduled within 3 days of closing: $200*
  • Before a tenant moves in: $120

*There will be a $500 penalty in addition to the $200 Certification Fee issued to the property owner for non-compliance of state law if this inspection is completed after the closing.

CAN I PAY BY CREDIT OR DEBIT CARD?

The Fire Prevention Bureau accepts credit cards for in-person transactions only. Please note that all credit card transactions will incur an additional 3% technology fee charge. We continue to accept cash or checks. Please make any check payable to the Village of Ridgewood and send to:

WHAT IF MY HOME HAS A MONITORED CENTRAL STATION FIRE ALARM SYSTEM?

Any residential or commercial property that has a monitored central station fire alarm system is required to register the alarm system with the Ridgewood Fire Department by calling 201-444-8822 x.4112.

COMMERCIAL INSPECTION INFORMATION

Any occupancy aside from one and two family dwellings is required to inspected annually. This includes businesses, churches, school, and multi-family dwellings.


If you are opening a business in the Village of Ridgewood, the Fire Prevention Bureau requires you to fill out a business registration form (PDF) and return by email or hand.
