Prevention Tips
- Do not approach wild animals and unfamiliar domestic pets like cats and dogs.
- Do not disturb a dog or cat that is sleeping, eating, or caring for its litter.
- Supervise young children or keep them separated from animals until an adult is present.
- Teach children to be gentle and to respect an animal's personal space.
- Obey leash laws in public settings.
- Always ask for permission to pet an unfamiliar dog or cat.
- Report dogs and cats that are running loose or acting aggressive.
Treatment
All mammals, including racoons, skunks, squirrels, bats and domestic pets like cats and dogs, can be infected with rabies.
If you are bitten or harmed by an animal (domestic or wild):
- Clean the wound immediately with soap and water.
- Seek prompt medical attention from a physician or hospital emergency department.
- Report the bite to the local health department.
Reporting Animal Bites
For bites that occur in Ridgewood, contact the Police Department at 201-652-3900 to file a report. The matter will be investigated and followed up by Tyco Animal Control or staff from the Health Department.
