Douglas Bayern, who coached and ran the Ridgewood chess program as a volunteer for 23 years, is being forced to step down from this role due to a recent diagnosis of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a progressive neurodegenerative disease). The club now needs to hire a coach for Ridgewood students.
Ridgewood’s strong chess program has a long legacy and Douglas has been central to the club’s success. Chess is such an important game for many reasons. Chess helps students with critical thinking, helps children plan ahead and make good decisions, is a great social activity, teaches good sportsmanship, and lays the foundation for lifelong skills.
It is Douglas’ heartfelt wish that chess club be available to all interested students at Ridgewood by keeping participation costs low for students.
